One for the writers. Most how-to-write books are recycled compendia of well-worn do’s and don’ts (many are downright suckertraps). This one, first published back in 1994, is one of the briefest and the best. The advice contained herein is clear and useful, and it’s presented in an informal tone that makes reading a joy. Want to know a better way to “murder your darlings?” How do you walk the line between just enough detail and too much? This book helps with all the questions you’ve been asking about your writing—and many you haven’t. It’s good for both novices and seasoned pros who want a refresher. (And any book that takes Toni Morrison’s writing to task is all right with me.) Reviewed on Sept. 9, 2021
