A political thriller about a ghost writer who’s authoring a book for a former British prime minister. There’s more to the job than the usual political-memoir banalities. Our ex-PM has a hidden past. He might even be a spy for the United States. Our writer has to figure out what’s what before shadowy bad guys end him.
This novel is traditional thriller fare—but of high quality. The writing is smart and believable, and the book doesn’t take itself too seriously. The last ten pages do require too much suspension of disbelief, but the journey up to that point is brisk, page-turning entertainment. No one will mistake this for Booker Prize material, but Harris clearly has a gift for keeping the reader happy. Reviewed on Sept. 2, 2021
